The Thing...
With very little transition time, the second Stü Art album picks up where the first (
Stü Art) left off. As those sessions ended, Mike and Jim had just started composing pieces with slightly more traditional song structure and more integrated instrumentation.
Men Attempt Trans-Atlantic Swimming Feat furthers those explorations and results in a modest evolution.
The album's title refers to an "event" that occurred at the same time this album was being recorded, where a French swimmer named
Guy Delage claimed to have swum across the Atlantic Ocean. That theme was picked up in the homage to this individual, "Guy Delage". Interestingly, Jim was aware of the proper pronunciation of Mr. Delage's first name prior to recording.
"I Wanna Records" was a point of early pride in the Stü Art catalog. The song lyrics listed numerous small independent record labels with whom the band was familiar, including the label that was the title of the song. I Wanna Records was a Dayton label that released material by bands including: the Obvious, Guided by Voices, and more.
As with the first album,
Men Attempt Trans-Atlantic Swimming Feat was not duplicated and distributed until the compilation

Lyrics
Write me a song
About the silver cougar
Or other leaded objects
With me as their topic
(chorus)
I don't need a future, now
I have a past...then
But that is only lost
When we play together fast
Write me a rhyme
About a winter gone past
Or other season
With their own casts
(chorus)
I wrote a song
To pass this time
I gave it no rhyme
For I knew not how...this time
But maybe the next
Will be much more of the same
And it will not be wrong
It never is
(chorus)
Lyrics
I heard that corporate rock still sucks
So make your homestead in a cottage
Have your limited potential dreaming of smiley turtle
Maybe one day you will make it big time
(chorus)
But I wanna records
But I wanna records
But I wanna records
But I wanna records
And I want em now
Cruz, Simple Solution, Twin Tone, Mutant Renegade,
New Alliance, Medussa, Boing
(chorus)
Lyrics
I credit my time as being
A part of this guitar
My guitar thanks me
Do I have something that I really
Need to say
Do you have anything which really
Must be heard
Does he like his life
Does she need her friends
What shall I choose to rifle
Through my thoughts
What shall you think of those
Things that I write
What are feelings that are never
What are ducklings that
You don't need this
There surely must be better
I know of this...stuff
That dreams are made
Sit there and do something
I credit my time as being
A part oft his ball
My shock thanks me
Lyrics
What feat has man left quite undone?
Something happy, something fun
To swim across a deep blue sea
Guy Delage says he'll do it, literally
(chorus)
A trans-Atlantic paddle with an unmanned raft
And supplies, and a rifle
And this is that
Given the support of a French company,
Guy starts from Sao Vincente,
from western Africa
Some ten hours a day for three months
He says he'll swim
Though he needs constant rest
He must, therefore, lie, maybe on his
Chest, getting sick
Oh well!
It's just there, the Atlantic
(chorus)
If it's never done, it doesn't matter
Because you all know it was tried
By Guy Delage
Lyrics
Soap kills things like putzes
And other things like putzes
See that big building
It's really just a big building
Oh yeah sure, Just go do that
Let's read the paper
See your opinion
Smooth, real smooth
You write a letter
It sits in a room
It is thrown away
Have a nice day
Soap kills but so do assassins
Lyrics
It's a challenge; one that we'll take
Trying different things
Way go, Way go, Way go
Say that, hey,
We needed that; Somethin' different
More than they'll ever know,
So there is what they say
Never so much
Which is ever, so say they
Given the opportunity
To shine in a hole in their head
One of many in the
Rest of the world
Poem say they
Story say way down the line
Glory for seven beyond eleven
It was a challenge; one that we took
Trying different things
Way go, Way go, Way go
Lyrics
Yeah, I remember those lyrics
You were skipping jollily down the hallway
You jumped over the railing
And everybody left the stage
Everybody was all alone
And you were really dazed, man
(chorus)
And it's just like these lyrics
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
They really go around
Yeah, yeah, yeah
You bite yo lip
Yeah, yeah
Yeah
We write things form the wallet
We're really sold out now
I remember the beginning
We really sat around
We never chase that dollar around and
around
Chorus or some other ugly gawk
(chorus)
Lyrics
(chorus)
Above the microphone
Above the microphone
You can't pick up your voice
But the view is nice
Above the microphone
You're standing up
Between a hundred rotting corpses
And evil Sid Shady
You sit there with a smile
Because everybody wants a day
They can call their best
Even though it's probably a lie
This is my second best
(chorus)
(chorus)
Lyrics
My favorite flower is the tulip
And I don't really know why
My favorite flower is the tulip
Gee oh gee look at the sky
And if there were only nine days a week
I know where I'd be
Nine days a week
Staring at my tulips
Just the Huskers and me
Laughing, cheering, woo, woo
The days always fly by
Staring at my tulips
Like flies to spit
We gather you and me
Under a tree, oh yeah
My tulips and me
Under a tree
I love that flower
Wouldn't you
Don't study so loud
I'm out of here
Lyrics
Pan away from the table and
Focus on the people from
The next town in the next state
Where the older people once had fun
Storing memories of things and stuff
For people who were swept away
With than perfect aspirations
(chorus)
Thanksgiving Day...
Thanksgiving Day
Nineteen Ninety-Four
They offer us more than ever given before
And I swear that I knew, always
What we had to do, in order to
Force living upon life itself
(chorus)
We must feed ourselves
Before the thoughts are gone
Before the damning light
Before the snow drives plight
November has come once more
Nineteen Ninety-Four
Lyrics
Much anticipated, little known
Been here today
There will never be a tomorrow
(chorus)
Why should you care
You'll be gone tomorrow
Smelling the cookies
You'll never eat one
Life's so boring
Let's go break the law
I wish they didn't always call
Not enough information
Come, come again
The Yoo-Hoo's always warm
Maybe there's something on tv
Nevermind
Way to loser
Ask some more questions
I like to cheat
Let's walk this ship all the way
(chorus)
Wish I wouldn't have left all my friends
Locked in the cellar
